Frewin Hermer
MA, LMFT

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (#LF60282308). My therapeutic approach is emotion focused therapy, using experimental techniques to elicit change. This entails working with my clients to meet them where they are in their process. In addition to working with individuals, I am trained in working with couples in all stages of their relationship. Emotion Focused Therapy is an approach to help couples and individuals explore the core issues in their lives and develop new ways to understand themselves and one another.

I believe that we all want to be the best versions of ourselves, but get stuck in old patterns. To help identify negative behaviors, I work with clients to stop these destructive cycles from continuing. I strive to help develop coping strategies that clients can begin to integrate into their daily lives, becoming self-strengthening and confident.

I am also a Certified Clinical Supervisor, which allows me to support other therapists as they develop their therapeutic style and professional confidence. I supervise pre-licensed mental health professionals to fulfill the mandatory hours for full licensure dictated by Washington State. I believe in helping supervisees identify their own strengths and ways to use the strengths when working with others in clinical settings. I offer supervision in one-on-one and group sessions.

Walk & Talk Therapy

I also offer walk and talk therapy for those who wish to take therapy off the couch. Movement propels people forward - literally and figuratively. Many clients prefer to take their sessions out of the office and into the outdoors. Somehow, the simple act of walking while talking out life’s issues creates change through forward movement. Through the rhythm of walking and talking there is a sync between the therapist and client. At a moderate pace, healing and breakthroughs occur!

Research shows that exercise reduces symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. Walk and talk sessions take place outside, at your pace, and can be especially helpful for working through transitions, or severe stress or trauma.

Walking therapy is a innovative approach to the hustle and bustle of today’s hectic world, we struggle to find time for everything we want to accomplish in a day, often compromising areas which have the most significant impact – nurturing ourselves.

When attempting to solve a dilemma, clients quickly achieve resolution and clarity when walking and talking. I will walk with you step by step on your journey in a comfortable office setting or on the trail. Your choice. Your pace.

* Dogs and strollers welcome on walks.

Education

I have a bachelors degree from Western Washington University in recreation management, and a masters degree from Antioch University in psychology. Before specializing in counseling, I worked as a sea kayaking instructor for REI and Outward Bound leading wilderness trips for all ages, focusing on personal growth and self-discovery via the natural environment. Since 2008, I have worked as a community mental health counselor in both agency and high school settings.

I am confident referring a variety of clients to Frewin and he is particularly outstanding with teens needing more support in their home life, at school, with substance use, and more."

- McKenzie Zajonc, Inner Nutritionist

"Frewin is a great therapist because of his genuinely warm and caring presence and his ability to connect to me as a client. I was worried that going to therapy would be a lonely process due to past experiences of feeling like I am the human with all the problems and my therapist is someone who is perfect and can't relate. With Frewin, however, you really feel like you are talking with someone who understands the challenges and the aches and pains of life. That deep empathy has really been transforming for me and I recommend Frewin for anyone looking to find help and support through their emotional challenges."

-Client

"I have worked with Frewin for two years. I continue to see him weekly because he makes me feel heard. He is a empathic listener and someone who has helped me find my own voice in my marriage and relationships with friends and family. I would highly recommend Frewin."
